But, a true highpoint comes with the love-spurned weeper “Burrito #1.” The song, which holds Parsons’ all-time greatest vocal treatment, was a co-write by Parsons and Etheridge, the two former members of the International Submarine Band, The album’s front and back covers showed the main four posing with Nudie suits, ala Hank Williams and Porter Wagoner.Įvery song on the release has merit, each contributing to the greatness of the whole. Skilled steel guitarist “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow and bassist Chris Ethridge completed the recording lineup, while four different drummers were used. The 1969 debut album, “The Gilded Palace of Sin,” was a masterful effort that was almost straight country that would prove to be highly influential. The Flying Burrito Brothers were formed after Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman left the Byrds. McGuinn’s vocal is heavily echoed in the song, a common practice employed during the psychedelic era. The song, “Antique Sandy,” had a shared writing credit by the four members of the group plus Jim Seiter, a part of The Byrds’ touring crew. Most reviewers were critical of those two albums with Rolling Stone Magazine calling the Byrds “boring” and “dead,” but I was always a fan that enjoyed anything McGuinn and the group released. The Byrds album ‘Farther Along’ was released in 1971 with a streamlined lineup of McGuinn, White, Battin, and Parsons, identical to ‘Byrdmaniax,’ released that same year. The beautiful title track of Indian Summer was written by Paul Cotton, who also provided the lead vocal. Rusty Young, a multi-instrumentalist, underrated vocalist, songwriter and quite possibly country-rock’s finest steel guitarist would be the group’s constant anchor and leader. Bassist Randy Meisner left to join The Eagles, a career move followed by Timothy B. Schmit and Paul Cotton along with the departure of Jim Messina and Richie Furay. Over the next few years, the band went through several personnel changes including the addition of Timothy B. Richie Furay, Jim Messina, and Rusty Young, a trio whose lifetime musical journey began while working on Buffalo Springfield’s final album, and George Grantham and Randy Meisner would form the original line-up. Poco were pioneers of the country-rock sound that soared out of California in the late Sixties and early Seventies. We begin with Poco and conclude with Mike Nesmith. The late twentieth century saw the exciting merger of rock artists embracing and transforming country music. ![]()
